The City has preliminarily named Greg Carpenter as the Interim City Manager, subject to his contract being approved by City Council at the February 28, 2023 Council meeting. Greg will step into the temporary role as City Manager Scott Collins leaves the City in March 2023, for the Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo.

Mr. Carpenter brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the City of Morro Bay, having served as a City Manager and Director of Planning and Building Safety for the City of El Segundo.  Prior to that, he served as Zoning Administrator and Planning Bureau Manager for the City of Long Beach. Most recently, he served as the Interim City Manager for Paso Robles.

Mr. Carpenter's experience in public sector management is extensive. During his tenure as the City Manager of El Segundo, he carried out the policy direction of the City Council, managed the Executive Team of the City, oversaw the financial health of the organization, developed long-range strategy and plans for the City, and acted as the Personnel Officer of the City.  Mr. Carpenter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and a Master of Public Administration from California State University Long Beach.

“We are thankful that Mr. Carpenter will be able to serve the community as Interim City Manager, while we work with a recruiter to search for the next City Manager,” said Mayor Carla Wixom.  “I believe Mr. Carpenter will be a good fit for the interim position, as he understands our region and has previously served as a city manager for a coastal California community.”

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve during this interim period while the City Council selects the next permanent City Manager for Morro Bay,” said Greg Carpenter.  “I’m looking forward to working with the Council, City staff, and the community to continue the projects and efforts that are underway, and set the stage for a smooth transition for the new City Manager.   Please feel free to reach out and contact me with any comments, concerns, or questions - I look forward to hearing from you.”

Mr. Carpenter will start his interim role with the City on March 13, 2023.  Meanwhile, the City is contracting with Mosaic Public Partners to conduct the search for the new City Manager.  The City will be seeking community and City staff input regarding what they would like to see in the next City Manager.  Surveys will be made available soon.
